Hazardous Waste

Due to environmental concerns and the human health threat imposed by the improper disposal of hazardous waste that are stored in nearly every home, the City of Fort Walton Beach recommends the following guidelines for proper disposal:

In Fort Walton Beach (south county), 80 Ready Ave.: Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3: 00 p.m.
In Crestview (north county), 1759 S. Ferdon Blvd.: Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
FREE Drop-off for local residents; no appointment necessary. For more information, call (850) 301-2013.

The Haz-MAT Centers collect, recycle, treat and properly dispose of the following hazardous waste:

  • Pesticides
  • Paint Strippers
  • Anti-Freeze
  • Used Oil
  • Furniture Polish
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Solvents
  • Batteries
  • Insecticides
  • Stale Gasoline
  • Engine Degreasers
  • Spot Removers
  • Paint
  • Brake Fluid
  • Computer/T.V.’s
  • Fluorescent Bulbs

PROPER DISPOSAL OF COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMPS (CFL) AND ALKALINE BATTERIES:

At each Home Depot, customers can simply bring in any expired CFL bulbs or alkaline batteries and give them to the store associate behind the return desk. Please keep the bulbs whole and unbroken, preferably in the box the replacement bulb(s) were purchased in. The bulbs and batteries will then be managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance.

PROPER DISPOSAL OF TIRES

Waste tires can be disposed of for FREE at the transfer station on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Landfill. This applies to local households, not businesses. Tire sizes are limited to passenger car and light truck tires. Quantities are limited to 5 tires per household per month.
