City of Fort Walton Beach Volunteer Boards, Commissions, and Committees
The City of Fort Walton Beach encourages citizens to become involved in its boards and committees. Members of City boards and committees play an important role in our City government. The following is a listing of all the current City of Fort Walton Beach boards, committees and commissions with Council-appointed membership. The Board of Adjustment is charged with the responsibility of hearing and deciding all appeals and applications for variances and special exceptions. The board also hears and decides appeals where it is alleged an error has been made by an administrative official in the implementation of the Land Development Code. It is a seven-member board; members are appointed to four-year terms. Members are limited to two successive terms and must be residents of the City of Fort Walton Beach. The board meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

The Code Enforcement Board enforces the provisions of the City code and ordinances (i.e. building maintenance, grass height, signage). The board has the authority to impose administrative fines and other non-criminal penalties. The seven members of the board must be residents of the City of Fort Walton Beach and are appointed to three-year terms. The members are limited to two successive terms. The board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 4 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board of Commissioners oversees redevelopment projects and recommends infrastructure improvements within the CRA district. The CRA endeavors to implement specific projects to encourage redevelopment within the CRA district. Florida law allows the use of tax increment financing to fund specific public improvement projects. The commission has seven members who are appointed to four-year terms. Members must either reside in the City or be engaged in business in the CRA district and are limited to two successive terms. The commission meets the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
The Firefighters' Retirement Fund is a five-member board responsible for the operation of the Retirement Pension Trust Fund for the City's firefighters. Members are appointed to two-year terms and the board meets as needed.
The Historic Sites and Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on issues relating to historic resources, sites and structures in the City. Members of this seven-member board are elected to four-year terms. The board meets the third Tuesday of every other month beginning in January. Meetings are held at 5:30 PM inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway.
The Housing Authority is responsible for providing safe and sanitary housing at affordable rents for income qualified families. The Housing Authority has seven members who are appointed by the Mayor to four-year terms. It meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 PM at the Housing Authority Neighborhood Community Center.
The Municipal Planning Board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on rezonings and development regulations, and monitors the implementation of the City's Comprehensive Plan. The seven members serve four-year terms, must be City of Fort Walton Beach residents, and are limited to two successive terms. The board meets the first Thursday of each month at 5 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
The Police Officers' Retirement Fund is a five-member board which is charged with the general administration and operation of the Retirement Pension Trust Fund for the City's police officers. Members are appointed to two-year terms. The board meets as needed.
The purpose of the Economic Advisory Group is to share information, establish a direct line of communication with the business community, promote the City, and provide guidance to City staff on matters relating to the economic well-being of the City. This purpose will include both long-term economic development goals and short-term projects specified within the Economic Implementation Plan for which the Group's represented agencies are responsible.
The EAG shall meet not less than once a quarter, and shall exist until November 30, 2013.
