Hurricane Irma & Monday City Services Update

The City of Fort Walton Beach is currently scheduled to open for our regular hours and services on Monday, September 11. Read on for this morning’s briefing from Okaloosa County Emergency Management:

TROPICAL FORECAST:

Okaloosa County Specific:

• At this time, there are no plans to conduct evacuations.

o The National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center have decided there is no need to post a tropical storm watch or warning for Okaloosa County
 A tropical storm warning has been posted for waters south of Okaloosa County
 All of our winds associated with the system will be from the north. There is less than a 10% chance of sustained tropical force winds although we will see wind gusts between 35 and 40 mph. Winds over Okaloosa are being suppressed by interaction with the land surface
 Once winds pass over the water there will be less resistance which will allow the wind speeds to increase to sustained tropical force winds
o We do have one host shelter open at Shoal River Middle school. The shelter is opened to host evacuees from south Florida
 Expected weather conditions for Okaloosa County should not require the use of risk shelters for the Okaloosa County populace since we do not expect tropical storm conditions.
o We have prepositioned some equipment as a precautionary measure only
o The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated to a level two in order to support operations at the one host shelter located in Crestview for evacuees from south Florida
o The EOC will continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Irma and take actions as needed based on any changes to the current track
o There are no plans to close any bridges or roadways at this time

For the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

Showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave located a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands continue to show some signs of organization. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for some development, and a tropical depression could form during the next few days while the system moves generally northwestward over the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Formation chance through 48 hours, low, 30 percent.
Formation chance through 5 days, medium, 60 percent.
